Final Project
I started with all of the shapes and I started laying them out so they would be in the right places.

Then I used the transferring method you showed me and started tracing the sketches on the tracing paper to the real paper

I got the leopard fabric

I also used some denim fabric I had for the floor carpet

I got some stuffing for the inside of the mini pillows and to make the carpet with.

I used muslin fabric to make the pillows and drapes because it was a good neutral fabric that matched the room

I cut out squares and ironed the muslin fabric to prepare to sew the pillows together.

I began pinning the pillows and sewing them by hand

I stuffed the pillows
I finished sewing them closed
I cut and sewed together the leopard pillow

I transferred over to my sewing machine to start the gathering process. You have to pull the top threads to make the fabric gather. You have to be careful and slow so that you can get a nice gather without ripping the thread.

I used the ink to get a neutral warm yellow color and painted the three shapes. I used modge podge to glue them down.

I glued fluff to the carpet and the pillows to create the illusion of fur. I used hot glue to glue down most of the fabric.

I also added gathering to the windows to give the illusion of drapes.

Overall, this was the most fun project for me because I felt the most comfortable in my skill set. Over the semester I have been getting more comfortable with using the different tools and I felt like this was my most successful project. I also liked using my interests of fashion and the prior skill set of sewing that I had before taking this class. Thank you for everything! I enjoyed your class!

Today, I continued to cut out tracing paper so I can use it for my permanent fabric and paper cut outs. The next step will be to begin cutting out my fabric. I also will begin mixing the colors of my ink to create similar colors so I can use them for the background of the collage.

For the texture project, I wanted to use my interest in fashion as a starting point for the assignment. I researched and used fashion pages on Instagram as my primary source of material. I focused on the rule of thirds to find a picture that was visually appealing. I also wanted a picture that was in black and white. I found a picture of a pair of shoes on Yves Saint Laurent’s page that encapsulated everything I wanted. The shoes used the rule of thirds to create a line of interest to keep the viewer interested. The shadows and black and white color scheme created depth and a good gradient for me to use my tools to reproduce. I spent a lot of time sketching and working on the placement of the shoe. I was extremely happy with the placement of the shoe, but I feel like since I spend so much time on it I did not get as much time to work on the textures. I really loved using the charcoal on the shoes and the eraser to create deep contrasts and shadows. I was pleased with the dark hues I was able to create on the page and the sharp contrast between the shoes and the background. I feel like as I continue to draw and practice I will be able to create some even more complicated pieces. I feel like I was able to make a lot of progress in my development in this project and it challenged me to get out my head and just draw.

Overall, I was extremely satisfied with my work for the first assignment. Drawing is completely out of my comfort zone so it caused me to challenge myself. I had to have patience with myself and try my best. Art is subjective and there is no “right” way to draw so it was extremely difficult for me to grasp. Using the different materials was challenging for me because I had never used anything like them before. My favorite tool was graphite because I am so used to using graphite in my daily life so it offered me a sense of familiarity. The most fun to use was the charcoal because it allowed me to let loose and be messy. I also liked the different drawing techniques because it was fun to let go of control. My most effective drawing was my last one of the bottom of the mirror. I feel like I got better and better with each drawing and was able to find my own techniques. I struggled the most with shading because it was difficult for me to see shadows and translate them onto the page. One of my techniques was I just began playing. I just tried to let go of control and begin letting my hand do the work. For some reason, my best work came when I stopped trying to make it perfect. In my future drawings, I want to continue to loosen up and I would also like to apply this ideology to my life in general and try not to take everything so seriously.
