I really enjoyed the Gestalt project because I was able to incorporate my photoshop skills and artistic ability. I chose lips because I really love lipstick. I also believe the mouth and lips are extremely important to the human experience. I began sketching lips and my lips began as extremely cartoony and sassy. After I talked with my professor, she encouraged me to try to draw more realistic looking lips also.
I started attempting to draw lips that were more realistic. I went on the internet for inspiration and drew different lips. I also looked around the classroom for more inspiration from my classmates lips. I studied the curvature and how each pair of lips is unique. Some of my lips pushed equivocality too far and were hard to identify without the context of a face.
I studied the principles of Gestalt and sought inspiration from the slideshow shown in class.
It was a challenge to use only black and white. The hardest part for me was to stick to using black and white only because I knew the designs would be so much more whimsicle with color. I am glad we were only allowed to use black and white because it challenged me to try and make my designs as unique as possible without color.
I decided I wanted a sassy theme for my designs. I really liked the element of simplicity associated with black and white. I wanted to make my designs look like logos. I wanted to be extremely simple, but memorable and whimsical.
I sought more inspiration from the internet and the world around me

I wanted to play with closure. I wanted to push the boundary to see how many lines could remove and still make the lips look like lips. I wanted it to be unequivocally lips, but be as equivocal as possible.

This is a sketch of puckered lips. I really liked the result, but I did not think the lines would transfer well into photoshop.

I started to sketch lips from a different angle. I really liked the profile look of the lips.

Figure ground was the principle I was most excited about. I wanted to do a figure ground reversal where one could see lips and another object. Here I saw a frog and lips. I continued to sketch more until I did a design I was satisfied with for figure ground reversal.

The following are the rest of my thirty sketches. I continued to manipulate all of Gestalt’s principles.

Here are all of my finalized Gestalt Principles
I played with the words because I knew they would have to be apart of the work. I wanted the words to continue the Gestalt theme. I also wanted the explanation to be a question challenging the viewer to question what they are looking at.

I did an extra figure ground below for fun.
